PREVIOUS: Caleb Logan Bratayley, the 13-year-old member of YouTube’s popular Bratayley family reality series, died Oct. 1 from an “undetected medical condition, according to his parents.
“Caleb’s death has raised many questions about how and why this could happen to a seemingly healthy boy,” the family said in a statement on Instagram Monday. “Sadly, tests have confirmed today that Caleb passed away from an undetected medical condition.” The family did not reveal the nature of his malady.
Police in Anne Arundel County, Md., responded to an emergency call last Thursday at the home of the family (which has not publicized their actual surname). Caleb was pronounced dead that evening; officials said they did not suspect foul play.
The family’s mother, Katie, previously said in an Instagram post that Caleb had died of “natural causes.”
The Bratayleys reality series — featuring Caleb and his two younger sisters, Annie and Hayley — is affiliated with Disney’s Maker Studios. The YouTube channel, which launched in December 2010, has 1.7 million subscribers.
The family said it would host a live-streamed memorial to Caleb on Facebook and Twitter’s Periscope (on @Bratayley) on Tuesday, Oct. 6, at 8 p.m. ET.
A video tribute to Caleb the family posted Oct. 4 to the Bratayley YouTube channel had accumulated 2.9 million views as of Tuesday morning.
Caleb Logan Bratayley, the YouTube star who died at age 13 last month, died of a heart condition called hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, his family said on Facebook on Tuesday.
According to the Mayo Clinic, the condition occurs when the heart muscle becomes abnormally thick, making it difficult for the heart to pump blood.
The Mayo Clinic notes that the condition often goes undiagnosed, which was the case in Bratayley’s death, the family said.
“The doctor confirmed today that Caleb passed away from a heart condition called Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy that went undetected in his yearly checkups,” the family’s Facebook post noted. “Caleb didn’t have any symptoms so the doctor said there was nothing we could have done differently.”
The family added that Caleb’s sisters were recently checked out, and thankfully their hearts “look the way they should right now.”
“The sadness of losing someone you love is unimaginable. Thank you to everyone who has reached out, your kindness and support continues to help our family. We miss our baked potato everyday,” the family concluded the post, along with the hashtags “#calebratelife” and “#celebratelife.”
In an Instagram post published shortly after Bratayley’s death, his parents disclosed that he had died of an “undetected medical condition.”
“Caleb’s death has raised many questions about how and why this could happen to a seemingly healthy boy,” the family wrote on Instagram Monday night. “Sadly, tests have confirmed today that Caleb passed away from an undetected medical condition,” the family said at the time.
